In the last 15 years, we have assisted to the development of a new technology to extract oil and gas and this has given many observers and industry operators a renewed expectation that a new era for hydrocarbons was likely to start. The oil and gas extracted in such a way has been called simply shale and the technology of extraction fracturing and cracking (fracking).
