At first glance, the integration of the internal electricity market seems to be on track. However, when taking a closer look it is clear that without an extra effort, much of the work done over the last decade may be at risk. Twenty years ago the joint energy wholesale market was at the heart of the internal market agenda. This was sensible because competition between conventional power plants across Europe would improve operational efficiency, meaning that consumers could be served by fewer and more efficient plants with less scope for operators to charge excessive prices…
