European Natural Gas Demand Supply & Pricing: cycles seasons and the impact of LNG price arbitrage
European Natural Gas Demand Supply & Pricing: cycles seasons and the impact of LNG price arbitrage / Anouk Honoré. Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. Oxford University Press, December 2010. ISBN 978-0-19-922653-5. £50.00
Despite general pessimism in the wake of the recession European gas demand is expected to increase to 635 bcm (0.6 percent per year) by 2020 driven mostly by the construction of new gas-fired power plants but with major differences between national markets sectors of consumption and period of recovery. Anouk Honoré’s study is the first academic book on European gas demand and supply for many years finds that demand was close to Take-or-Pay (TOP) levels of contracted pipeline gas in 2010 but this tightness should relax in 2011. Contracted gas including LNG supplies are sufficient to meet demand until 2014 but in the second half of the decade Europe will need to secure additional gas in what seems likely to be a highly uncertain environment for world gas supply.
