A study undertaken by Ohio State University, Duke, Stanford, Dartmouth and the University of Rochester has traced the path of gas migrating beneath the ground to determine the source of drinking water contamination, and has concluded that this is likely due to faulty wells rather than the drilling operations per se.
The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week. The researchers, who used a new ‘gas geochemistry data’ technique, did not find evidence that horizontal drilling or hydraulic fracturing of shale deposits caused natural gas contamination at 130 wells in Pennsylvania and Texas that were examined during the project…
