The year 2015 had a great diplomatic and media effervescence. France, as the host country, under the aegis of the UN, and host of the COP21 (21st International Conference of the Parties) devoted to climate change, has set itself the objective of obtaining firm commitments for the reduction of greenhouse gases, and especially carbon dioxide (CO2), from 200 countries on the planet. With the goal to limit, at 2 ° C or less, the warming of Earth’s climate system, before 2100. CO2 actually provides an important contribution to the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. With, as a result, a significant increase in the average temperature of the climate system of the Earth during the last two centuries. These CO2 emissions obviously have a history, still little known. But this story is closely linked to the increasingly massive use of coal as a fuel. Contrary to general opinion, this use of coal began earlier, in England, than the Industrial Revolution, conventionally dated around 1750-1760. The purpose of this article is to remember, after English historians, the history of the substitution of wood by coal, which became therefore universal fuel. That acted an early energy transition, seen only much later, but whose consequences are now obvious. The choice, made from the beginning of the 15th century of coal by the English, led the world into an economic model that will be difficult to change. The agreement, validated on December 12, 2015, after laborious negotiations, countersigned by April 2016 at the UNO, must still be approved by the parliaments of the countries participating in the COP21. This will take time, and will cause many problems, especially financials. This approval, if it takes place, will it be enough to move to the necessary actions to avoid a widespread climate drift?
